Learn more about the calculator and how we calculate your savings

Purpose of this calculator

This electrification calculator is designed to help New South Wales households estimate the potential running cost savings and emissions reductions that may be achieved by switching from higher-emissions household appliances and vehicles to lower-emissions alternatives.

The calculator provides indicative estimates only. Actual savings and emissions reductions will depend on your household’s energy use, appliance choices, vehicle use, energy plan, fuel prices and other individual circumstances.

This calculator is for general information only and does not constitute financial or professional advice.

Where our data comes from

Our calculations are based on high-quality, publicly available Australian datasets and benchmarks:

Energy Consumption

Household electricity and gas usage benchmarks are sourced from the Australian Energy Regulator (AER).

Household and climate adjustments

The calculator applies assumptions for household location, climate zone and dwelling type to better estimate typical household energy use across New South Wales.

Gas Usage Shares

The breakdown of how gas is used across different appliances is based on the Determinants of Household Energy Consumption report published by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) of NSW.

Electricity Emissions

Data on the emissions intensity of the NSW electricity grid is provided by openelectricity.org.au.

Natural Gas Emissions

Emission factors for natural gas in NSW are sourced from the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water’s Australian National Greenhouse Accounts 2025.

Vehicle Emissions and Performance

Vehicle emissions data is based on the National Transport Commission’s (NTC) Light Vehicle Emissions Intensity in Australia report and the Green Vehicle Guide, Australian Automobile Association road congestion data and Australian Bureau of Statistics vehicle fuel consumption data.

Fuel Pricing

Petrol and diesel price estimates are derived from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) Australian Petroleum Industry Quarterly Reports.

Energy costs

Electricity and gas cost estimates are based on the information entered by the user, combined with calculator assumptions about household energy use and selected switching options.
